SCHOOL-BASED (School Buddy) PROGRAM

Sometimes in volunteer work you hear people say, "I feel like I have received much more than I ever gave away." Becoming a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters can be just as rewarding for you as it is for the child!

School Buddy Volunteers should have a positive outlook on life and possess a desire to truly help a child. Giving a little of your time can make a big difference to a kid. We encourage applications from mentors high school age and up!

What is the aim of this program?
The goal of the School Buddy Program is to create solid mentoring relationships between volunteers from our community and children from area schools. We believe that a positive role model and friend can directly benefit the life of a child.

What children do we serve?
The School Buddy Program currently serves children in grades one through six. An ideal candidate would be a student who is having difficulty with scholastic and/or social skills. Of course, our program goal is to help any child in need of a friend or role model.

We serve children in all of Marshfield's Public Elementary Schools, Stratford, Auburndale, Pittsville, and Wisconsin Rapids Elementary Schools. New to our program is the Marshfield Alternative Middle School. We are excited to be included in the alternative middle school, and look forward to relearning Algebra, maybe this time it will make sense!

What do School Buddies do?
School Buddy volunteers meet with a child on school grounds during designated school hours. Mentors are asked to commit themselves to the program for one hour per week for the school year, where they will work primarily on school work with their School Buddies.

What are "Mentors?"
  • Mentors are unconditional friends.
  • Mentors are encouraging role models.
  • Mentors help a child feel self worth.
  • Mentors teach respect and honesty.
  • Mentors are open-minded.
  • Mentors respect the privacy of the child.
  • Mentors don't push, they guide!
  • Mentors have positive views on life.
  • Mentors broaden a child's mind.
  • Mentors are important.
