WHAT IS BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS?
Since 1967, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Wood County has been
matching caring, responsible volunteers with children ages 6-14
primarily from single-parent homes and encouraging the relationships
to grow. Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) programs are designed to
fill the need of a positive role model during a child's developmental
years.
Generally a boy, or "Little", is placed with a male Volunteer, or
"Big" and a girl is placed with a female Volunteer. However, matches
consisting of a Big Sister and Little Brother are not uncommon and
may be considered based upon the circumstances and needs of a child.
Also, a child may be considered for placement with a Big Couple which
provides both male and female role models. The couple may spend time
with a child as a group of three or as a pair if one of the members
is unavailable to participate in an activity due to other commitments.
Couple matches provide the child with the added benefit of an
additional adult friend as well as the opportunity to observe a
positive marital relationship.
The volunteers involve themselves in the lives of their Little Brother
or Sister by taking an interest in what they are doing and by serving
as a positive role model and confidant.
"Bigs" help bolster the child's self-confidence by offering emotional
support and encouragement during times of uncertainty, vulnerability
or confusion. It is through this special friendship that our kids
stay great!
